With more than 30 years of experience in data protection, IT systems management, and information security, James Koons brings a broad range of expertise to his role as a founding partner at DPSA. He commands a comprehensive understanding of the broad legal frameworks that govern data protection, commercial email, and international electronic commerce, and he is an active leader in the global privacy community. From testifying before House and Senate committees to participation at major industry events, Mr. Koons, a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), is a seasoned public speaker and expert witness on data protection and data privacy topics.
Mr. Koons’ passion for e-commerce and customer-centric thought process began during his time at Amazon and has carried through to present-day. Working in both tactical and strategic roles, Mr. Koons enjoys the “hands-on” work as much as the strategic guidance he provides. His split-focus helps clients maximize their privacy technology adoption as well as maintain clear and achievable strategic goals for their privacy programs.
His IT and information security career began as a special operations soldier in the United States Army working with both JSOC/SOCOM and NSA/CSS Europe (NCEUR). Mr. Koons has held senior management and consulting positions at Unisys, Staples, and Amazon as well as serving as an adjunct information systems and technology instructor at an accredited university.
Mr. Koons has a keen interest in the fight against messaging malware and has served as a board member, contributor, and advocate for messaging anti-abuse professionals at various organizations including M3AAWG (Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group), the ESPC (Email Sender and Provider Coalition), the EEC (Email Experience Council), the DMA (Direct Marketing Association) and NRF (National Retail Federation).
He is also active in key organizations such as the IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals) where he currently serves on the Research Advisory Board, and is regular participant with the Future of Privacy Forum.
In addition, Mr. Koons is an active member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) InfraGuard as well as the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit’s (MPCCU) FALCON project (Fraud and Linked Crime Online) in the United Kingdom. He has also worked with the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) on data protection and data privacy matters.
Data is one of the most precious resources in our global information economy; it is the fuel that drives commerce and culture and redefines how we connect and engage with the world around us. We as privacy professionals are the stewards of trust in the global information economy. — James Koons
